About this registry

An unofficial, independent map of Santa Monica's rent-controlled housing, rebuilt each month from the City's public Maximum Allowable Rent (MAR) lookup tool. The MAR is the legal rent ceiling for a controlled unit; a $0 MAR means the unit is marked as exempt.

Status & accuracy

Everything here is derived from the City's public records and can lag, miss, or misread them; for anything that matters, verify against the City's MAR lookup tool.

Data ingestion and validation are a work in progress and the registry should not be considered complete. Local smoke testing plus spot checks against parcels with known histories, including buildings I've lived in, have matched the official records. If you notice something incorrect, or have any other feedback, please open a GitHub issue.

Cadence & licensing

The registry refreshes monthly via a scheduled GitHub Action; the map rebuilds automatically when the data commits. Code is MIT-licensed; the registry data is released CC0. Full source and data: BradEwing/rcb-database.
